Important Announcement

We would like to thank our loyal fellow members of the Nike Historical Society for your continued support over the years. We will be closing the Society, including the store, as of March 31, 2024. We have acquired a large repository of Nike technical information. The web site will continue to be available. It has been our pleasure to keep the legacy of the Nike missile's contribution of the successful conclusion to the Cold War.

Name: Carl W Moreland
EmailAddress: cmoreland@neo.rr.com
Remarks: I had the distinct pleasure of serving with the 3d Bn (Herc) 59th Artillery, Milwaukee Air Defense from 1966 - 1968. I had just returned from Italy, 5th Bn, 30th Arty (Sergeant). Due to a thing called Vietnam, the Bn was was short of Commissioned Office so I was assigned as the Bn S4. As a Quartermaster WO, I have served with all the Combat Arms types but I never served with a more dedicated group of soldiers than those in Air Defense Artillery. Not to make light of it, but with truly "24 hour status", I thought "Hardship Tours" were only in places like Korea. Thanks for having being part of the Air Defense Artillery Family. . Carl W. Moreland CW4, U.S. Army (Ret)

Remarks: As I understand it, I was the last class leader of the the last 24 u course at Ft. Bliss Tx. I graduated in late April 1986, and was assigned to C Tm 51st USAAD,5th USAAG in Edewecht ,Germany. The Headquarters was in Adelheide/Delmenhorst. 5th USAAG was out of Buren. As that site was closed, I was assigned to A Tm 43rd USAAD in Thum, Germany. The Headquarters was under Belgian support in Duren, Germany. That site was closed in Aug of 1988 as was Buren. I returned to Ft Bliss and without an mos as it was deleted, I reclassed into the Army Band field. Presently, I am stationed with the 98th Army Band at Ft rucker, Alabama. It has been 12 years since I was ADA and I still miss it. The best years of my Army career was spent serving as a 24U with the Nike Hercules system. Thanks for the great page. I hope to someday find and recapture my past once again.
