Assigned to B-1/60 (C-32, Porter, IN) as launcher platoon leader (~Sep68 to ~Apr69) {no significant emotional events}. Transferred to A-1/60 (C47, Wheeler, IN) also as launcher platoom leader (~Apr69 to Nov69) {first man lands on the moon}. Attended Military Intelligence OBC Ft. Holibird (Nov/Dec69) prior to PCS to Viet Nam {Mets win the world series}. Mal-assigned to a Field Artillery Battalion (Pleiku) [1/92 (155T)] from Dec69 to ~Mar70 when I wrangled a reassignment to HHB-4/60 (An Khe) (Dusters, Quad-50s, Searchlights) XO HHB, Bn S-2. ~Mar70 to Dec70 {Kent State, Janis Joplin, J. Hendrix}. Inter theater transfer to A-5/1 (McCully Barracks, Wackernheim, GE) as Battery Commander Jan71-Jun72. {had to buy new unit crests}

THE RIDE FROM PIRMASENS TO THE BASE WAS COLD AND ROUGH WITH THE DRIVER FROM HELL AT FULL SPEED ON SNOW PACKED MOUNTAIN ROADS OF THE PFALZER WALD FOREST. HE NEVER MISSED A GEAR AND HARDLY TOUCHED THE BRAKES AS WE BLASTED THRU ANNWEILER ON NARROW COBBLESTONE STREETS. BUT HE LET THE WHEELS TOUCH DOWN IN LANDAU TO GIVE ME A TOUR OF THE TROOPS MOST FREQUENTED ATTRACTIONS BEFORE GOING TO UP TO BASE. AT EIGHTEEN YEARS OLD I BEGAN 2YEARS 5MONTHS AND 7DAYS OF A MARVELOUS MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE. JAMES MANCEL WAS THE DRIVER. HE BECAME A GREAT FRIEND, AS DID SO MANY. Remarks: I spent 33 months of my enlistment, Nov 1958 to February 1962,at McGregor Range Ft. Bliss, Texas in the McGregor Ordnance Detachment, 61st Ordnance Group. Commanding Officer was Robert H. Newell, First Sgt Gooch. Arrived Pvt E-2 ... separated as Sp5 E5 on February 27, 1962. I would like to hear from anyone who served in McGregor Ordnance Detachment ... Especially from June 1959 to February 1962.

Remarks: Finally taking a long deferred nostalgic trip now that airfares on US Air are so low. I will be going back to Hoppstadten to visit the former site of Hq Hq Btry (DSP) 5th Bn 6th Arty, also to Neubrucke to the 98th General Hospital base. Leaving 12/26/01 and returning 1/2/02. It's been 30 years! Hope to stay at Gasthaus Waldesruhe, also know as the "Four Daughters" in Neubrucke, maybe see my old landlord and some of the locals that I knew back in 1969-1971. I'll let you all know how it turns out!
